The story of Balenciaga
"Haute Couture is like an orchestra with Balenciaga as conductor.", as Christian Dior used to say of the "couturiers' couturier". Already heading up his own fashion house in Spain, Cristóbal Balenciaga opened a new boutique in Paris en 1936, assisted by Hubert de Givenchy. Frequented by crowned heads and Hollywood stars alike, Balenciaga brought Avenue Georges V to life with his unique style, because the Spanish designer was one of the few who actually knew how to sew. An architect at heart, he took the power of cutting to its zenith by inventing ethereal volumes with incredible drapes, very far from the 'New Look' style of the day. Balenciaga was a flamboyant visionary who was able to create multiple micro fashion revolutions like no-one else. The post-war Balenciaga style features the famous 'barrel' line and his boleros, but also an ultra-sleek style, the sports suit and boots that created a tidal wave, the baby doll look, the shirt dress, the sailor top... in short, a whole world of looks with unfitted waists and quasi-conceptual trapezoidal volumes.
Having been revamped by Nicolas Ghesquière, Balenciaga is now in the hands of one of the most high-profile artistic directors on the planet: Demna Gvasalia. Owned by the Kering group, the French luxury fashion house pulled off a master stroke by appointing one of the most avant-garde designers of his generation as its head. Cristóbal Balenciaga having pushed fashion innovation to its height, it needed a designer of the stature of Demna Gvasalia to take over the reins. Spotted via his own 'Vetements' label, Demna Gvasalia is a Georgian underground designer with a very particular look. He envisages luxury with spare parts and, at Balenciaga, has imagined an entire wardrobe of must-have pieces that reinvent the modern look with everyday clothing. The man who describes himself as a 'dressmaker' floods the internet at each Paris Fashion Week. Balenciaga fashion shows are the most watched on the planet and the brand now has millions of followers, recognisable by their triple S sneakers or Speed Trainers.
Balenciaga for children
It's unbelievable but true, the hottest brand of the moment unveiled its range of clothing for children during the Balenciaga men's spring-summer 2018 fashion show. The Parisian catwalk saw boys and girls in Balenciaga clothes in sizes from 2-10 years, designed by Demna Gvasalia. The designer adapted the brand's must-haves for children, such as the Balencia Speed Trainer in sizes 25/26 to 33/34. Also on the agenda, 'The Power of Dreams' and 'Think Big' children's T-shirts and sweatshirts, Balenciaga slogans, plus a whole series of joggers for girls and boys inspired by Balenciaga's Bernie Sanders logo. Unisex, casual and more fashionable than ever, this Balenciaga mini-me range pays contemporary homage to the master.
