In world of haute couture and runway shows, there is only one bad boy of fashion. He was the man behind Madonna’s cone-bra bustier in the 90s and Lady Gaga’s looks in the noughties. His fetish motif? Mariner stripes. His iconic wardrobe staple? A kilt. In an exclusive interview for Le Magazine, we sat down with French fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier to find out more about his childrenswear collections, because in the designer’s own words, fashion has no age.
What were you like as a child?
I was shy, rather reserved.

At what age did you realize you wanted to be a fashion designer?
At 10 years old while watching Jacques Becker’s Falbalas, starring Micheline Presle. The story, which ended dramatically, took place in a couture house.

What was your first fashion creation as a child?
It was when I got my first teddy bear. I named her Nana and I used to dress her up.

What did you hate wearing as a child?
It was more of an accessory than anything: balaclavas.

And your favourite?
A suit with shorts.
